The attacker machine keeps sending traffic to the server and eventually the server cannot handle it anymore because it is fooled by the traffic, so the server goes down.

Using his commanding server, the attacker uses a bot army to attack a single destination.

How does an attacker build an army of bots?

The attacker can simply give out free software like cracks or offer links. If someone clicks on it or installs it, he will be a bot for the attacker.
